What the heck is Kumihimo? It is a form of Japanese braiding. Translated into English, Kumihimo means braided string/cord. It's very easy to learn and do. The Japanese have used braids made of multiple ends of fine silk threads for over 1200 years. The braids were used to lace the plates of Samurai armor together, to make a grip on the handles of swords, for tying clothing and scrolls. After the Samurais were abolished in the late 1800's, braids were mostly used as decoration, for hanging personal adornments. Braids are still used today as the narrow belt for the wide obi sash that wraps around the traditional kimono and as jewelry, key rings and embellishments on clothing and dolls. Kids pick up the skill quickly to make shoelaces. key chains, friendship bracelets, necklaces, zipper pulls, trim for their clothes, and much, much more. They are very creative with the braids. We carry all of the supplies needed to do this, including the cording, patterns, the Hamanaka discs and plates, easy bobbins and more. We teach classes also.
